About Henley Midmar Yacht Club

Hunter

The Henley Midmar Yacht Club has without question the most picturesque setting of any inland yacht club in South Africa, with sweeping views over the keelboat moorings and mountains in the distance. A mere 60 minute drive from Durban and 15 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, HMYC is the perfect setting for weekend racing or cruising. Whether you are looking to race Hunters, Lasers, Optimists, 29’ers or enjoy a relaxing cruise, Midmar offers a huge expanse of water with fair winds. There is a racing calendar most weekends (see Sailing Calendar) during the season along with many Provincial and National Regattas held at the club throughout the year.
Accommodation is available within the Midmar reserve in the form of Chalets, Rustic Log Cabins and Campsites as well as Campsites being available to Club Members at the club for Regatta’s and weekends. (see Camping Application)
If you would like more information regarding the club, would like to get involved or find a boat to suit your needs, please contact any member of the Committee (see Contacts) either by phone or email..

Radio Sailing at HMYC

HMYC has an affiliate club - the "Maritzburg Radio Sailing club"-- MRYC which has now relocated to Midmar due to unsuitable conditions at the 'Duzi. As an affiliate club, MRYC performs activities which are supplementary to HMYC and, indeed, there is much membership overlap between HMYC and MRYC. MRYC sails from the HMYC-laid course on the foreshore every SECOND SATURDAY AFTERNOON and THURSDAY EVENINGS. Saturday comprises formal league racing in the "R36 class" with very tight racing. Racing starts at 14h00 'till 16h00. The R36 class is a cheap self-build class which hones one's general sailing and tactical skills very well. Thursday is a very informal, relaxed affair with absolutely any radio sailing yacht welcome, 17h00 'till too dark to see the boats! This is followed by a braai into the evening which, during the winter, becomes the main business! HMYC clubhouse is a very pleasant venue for an evening braai. HMYC members are welcome to the Thursday evenings for a BYO braai, anytime after 17h00. Those wishing to join in and experience the challenge are welcome to contact Des Fairbank on 0832890962 or desf@telkomsa.net or just pop in to join in.
